Samsa-i-Amsa
Animist Painter
I am a watercolorist working out of my public art studio at McGuffey Art Center in downtown Charlottesville. Come visit!
Appalachia, Queerness and Animism form the foundation of my work. Mysticism, too, when I can muster it.
I create “monumental” watercolors at up to 32 square feet in size.
I believe that analog art must be experienced in-person (always on display for you in my studio!). Still, I have provided this online portfolio site to appease the bloodGods of capitalism.
You can find my work at The Beautiful Idea, McGuffey Art Center, and various art shows around Virginia.
If you are interested in buying a giclée print, an original painting, or in commissioning a piece, please contact me using the form at the bottom of this page.
Creation as Revelation, Interpretation:
If it could be said I would say it. If it could be written I would be a poet. Luckily, I am a fool, and so it all just tumbles through me in pigment and image.
It’s godly gibberish but it gets the point across.
Revelation
I follow where curiosity and interest lead. I do not interrogate with intellect and I keep the ego at bay. I feel, follow, allow the images and compositions to come forward.
I am neither creative or clever. I am open and fool-hearty.
Interpretation
After the revelation we all have our interpretations. My paintings act as prism, mirror, lens allowing you to look out at your own interiority.
Whatever you see is True about You.
Your truth, your interpretation is your responsibility.
